Sled Training: Power, Performance & Versatility

Sleds are a staple in functional training, known for delivering full-body strength and conditioning. Whether you're pushing for explosive speed or pulling for endurance, sled workouts develop power in the glutes, hamstrings, quads, calves, and core, while also challenging your grip, upper body, and cardiovascular system.

How Much Does a Sled Weigh?

Our sleds vary in weight depending on the design and material. Most unloaded sleds range from 15kg to 40kg, with additional weight easily added using Olympic plates. This flexibility allows training for speed, strength, or hypertrophy depending on your goals.

Push vs Pull – What's the Difference?

  • Sled Push: Engages the quads, glutes, and core, focusing on acceleration and explosive lower-body power. Great for athletic conditioning and sprint mechanics.
  • Sled Pull: Involves more hamstring, posterior chain, and grip activation, especially when done backwards. It’s a powerful tool for rehab, knee health, and improving eccentric strength.

Both movements are low-impact yet high-intensity, making sleds ideal for building strength without overloading the joints.

Flooring Considerations

Sleds work best on smooth indoor turf or rubber gym flooring. High-friction surfaces like raw concrete or coarse rubber may cause unnecessary drag or damage. If you're unsure, SMAI's turf tracks and sled-friendly flooring options are optimised for safe, effective training.
