A Glimpse into the 2023 CrossFit Games: Jake Douglas' Experience

Article | TEAM SMAI

The CrossFit Games is known for its intense, gruelling workouts, and this year was no exception! Competitors from across the world were put through a series of physically and mentally demanding CrossFit challenges to determine who would come out on top and be crowned the “fittest on earth”. One of the toughest factors of the Games is that competitors have no idea what the challenges will be until just before the Games. This means athletes have the tough job of training their bodies to be ready for whatever may be thrown their way when they arrive at the Games.

The process of making it to the Games as an individual athlete is a difficult one. Only 40 men and 40 women from across the globe can qualify for the Elite Individual category in the Games. Of these positions, six are handed out at the Oceania Semi-finals (Torian Pro). Jake Douglas put on an incredible performance at the Crossfit Open followed by the Torian Pro where he placed 3rd, securing his ticket to the Games for the first time.

We caught up with Jake when he landed back in Australia after the Games to chat about his experience competing at the 2023 Games for the first time.

How was your experience preparing for the Games?

“It was incredible. Spending 2 months alongside Mat Fraser (5 time CrossFit games champion) and Katrin Davidsdottir (2 time champion) Was just an unbelievable experience. I learnt so much.”

What motivates you on the days you don’t feel like training?

“Just the habit of actually training I think. It's something I have done for so long so I fall back to the habit of it being just something I do. There is also the little voice in my head that even if I don't want to do it, I need to do it if I want to improve.”

Are you satisfied with your Games experience?

“I am Grateful for the opportunity and all I learned. But I am not quite satisfied with my performance. Some unfortunate things happened alongside some rookie mistakes that really cost me. I am really fired up to improve and get back there!”

What event did you enjoy the most?

“I actually loved "Helena", though it wasn't a great finish. But I really gave that event everything I had. I am proud of the effort!”

What did you miss most about Australia?

“Easy. My family!! But outside of that, the coffee........”
